R5H5 is a carved out anagram from the corresponding coordinates of “Desert Breath”, an art of land sculpture to be found in the Egyptian desert near Hurghada on the Red Sea coast. A double-spiral work completed in 1997, it was crafted by a group of three Greek artists - Danae Stratou (sculptor and installation artist), Alexandra Stratou (industrial designer) and Stella Kon-stantinidis (architect). Their aspiration was to suggest an experience of infinity addressing the desert as a landscape of the mind. Notwithstanding its slow disintegration, the installation is still viewable and has been seen as an instrument to measure the passage of time. The two interlocking spirals change and deteriorate over time, but what remains unaltered is their charm and allure while becoming more complex and multifaceted. Likewise R5H5 aims to be a meter of time, that is to go through events which have led to the birth of current society.
R5H5 is a multifaceted ensemble of different themes and inspirational references ranging from artistic concepts to filmography, such as sci-fi, the Botswanan underground Metalheads, 15th century footwear, time capsules and the concept of Brutalism.
Intertwining different cultures within diverse and distant historical junctures, such fusion morphs into an array of futuristic aesthetics from workwear to military tactical uniforms as the tenets of such expression.
